A Family of Christians…or…A Christ Centered Family

As a pastor I am caught between a great sense of optimism and despair when I observe the families of our congregation.  I am optimistic because I see tremendous potential in almost every family to make a real difference in the world for our Lord’s Kingdom.  However, I am also discouraged because I cannot help but notice a glaring misconception held by many.  There is the destructive belief that a Christian family is a household of people who profess a belief in Christ, regularly attend church, attempt to live by religiously defined moral standards, and teach their children right from wrong.  While I praise God for families with these characteristic it must be made clear this just trying to do “Christian” things does NOT make a home Christ centered.

The gospel is about the life changing power of the Lord Jesus to redeem people and then indwell them with His Holy Spirit.  Being a Christian is not simply about living right, it is about dying to self and allowing Christ to live through one’s life.  It is about His lordship being established in every area of a follower’s life.  But what does this mean for the family?  It means that a Christ centered family is one that allows the gospel to penetrate every part of their existence.  It means looking, speaking, behaving, relating, loving, giving, serving, and growing in a radically different way than families who do not know Christ.  It means having a purpose far above just paying bills, taking vacations, acquiring homes, trading cars, getting booster shots, and filming recitals.  It means intentionally using the power of family to glorify the Lord and grow His Kingdom.

Is your family Christ centered or simply a group of people attempting to live by Christian values? Values are important but they cannot be a substitute for the dynamic experience of allowing the Lord Jesus to invade your marriage, guide your parenting, define your priorities, and breathe His life into your entire family.
